Maine Filmmaker to Make Zombie Flick
ELLSWORTH — “The Undead” is not your average zombie flick.
Director/writer/lead actor Matt Quinlan of Ellsworth says the short film will be “an emotional, character-driven movie.”
Blood and gore — while present — will not be the focus.
“We’re trying to do it differently,” said the locksmith and aspiring filmmaker.
The movie, which Quinlan plans to film in September, will be 30 to 45 minutes long.
It will be the first in a series of five “Undead” films, each centered on a different character. The first film will tell the story of Joseph Mason. Mason’s wife and son are killed in the zombie apocalypse and he must fight for survival.
In Quinlan’s film, zombies are created by a government experiment gone wrong. In trying to cure brain cancer, scientists create a viral outbreak. The test subjects die and the virus reactivates a small feral portion of their brains. The walking dead are born.
Quinlan said his zombies will be “traditional.”
“They’re slow-moving, easy to run away from, but scary because there are so many of them,” he said.
He plans to cast 15 to 20 volunteer actors as the undead. No experience is necessary. In lieu of pay, zombies will be fed, recognized in the credits and given a copy of the movie.

The goal is to release the first “Undead” film around Halloween. It will be posted on YouTube and theundeadfilms.com. High-definition copies will be available for purchase on DVD and Blu-ray.
