The village of Homewood will be invaded by zombies Saturday, July 21.

No need to worry, though. It's all for the good of the community.

Homewood is inviting residents to participate in a series of zombie-themed films called "Zombie Paradise," that are being made to promote the village as cool and a bit off-beat.

The casting call will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 21 at Hillcrest Park on Locust Road and Rockwell Avenue. The shoot will start at 4:30 p.m. and last approximately one hour. Homewood residents are encouraged to participate as extras in the film and to come dressed in zombie makeup and wearing regular clothes.

"This project is another example of the fun, creative and quirky mindset of Homewood," said Rachael Jones, public relations manager for the village. "You're in the right place to have fun in Homewood.

"We are a melting pot of professionals, artists, educators, musicians ... all ages, backgrounds and race. And the methods of how we highlight Homewood and its amenities should be as interesting as the audience we try to reach."

The Zombie Paradise films are meant to depict Homewood as a place that fosters a diverse community in a humorous way. One of the films will feature a scene in which a human family has a picnic alongside a zombie family. In the scene, the camera pans from the family eating normal picnic fare to the zombie family nibbling on human legs.

The videos are part of You're in the Right Place, a marketing campaign to promote Homewood as an inclusive and creative community. The campaign is being is headed by Jones.

The concept for the Zombie Paradise films started with discussions with residents about how to use social media to promote Homewood's community. Village officials quickly jumped on board with the idea in the hope that the films will expose Homewood to an online audience.

"With many new outlets for news and entertainment, we need to be creative with how we develop and tell people about Homewood," said Richard Hofeld, village president, in a press release.

The 60-second films will be posted on the village of Homewood's Facebook page atfacebook.com/villageofhomewood, and on youtube.com.

The first video will be launched Monday, Aug. 6; the second video Monday, Aug. 20; and the final video will be online Monday, Sept. 10. All three videos will be aired at Fall Fest on Saturday, Sept. 15.

Homewood resident Brandon Wood, a Columbia College film student, will film the videos, and Jesse Deyo, Homewood resident and film and television music composer, will score the films.

Later this year, Homewood will offer additional public arts initiatives as part of You're in the Right Place, including a project that will allow local artists to decorate fiberglass map marker icons to be displayed in the village. Homewood will also unveil new street banners this summer.

In the meantime, the zombies await.

"Homewood has a sense of humor," Deyo said. "The zombie concept is an off-beat way to communicate the open attitude that we value a diverse group of people, even the undead."
