Two years after it was filmed here, Niagara Falls will finally get to see the 3D horror comedy Dead Before Dawn.
Directed by hometown star April Mullen, the award-winning romp will have a special outdoor screening at E E Mitchelson Park (next to Saint Paul high school) Aug. 16 at 9 p.m. A key scene in the movie was filmed here during a sweltering July heat wave in 2011, and Mullen feels it’s the perfect place to have the local premiere.
“We wanted to do something,” she says on the line from Los Angeles, where she’s filming a web series. “We thought, why not go outside, under the stars?”
The movie will be shown on a 40-foot screen on the football field where the film’s ‘Zemons’ (half zombie, half demon) make their first appearance. Several locals were used for the scene, and Mullen is hoping they all return to where it started.
“We’ve been all over the world,” she says, ”and my favourite part is the homecoming.”
Dead Before Dawn is the third feature Mullen has made with longtime partner/producer Tim Doiron, and is by far the most successful. It won a major tech award for its use of stereoscopic 3D at the 3D Stereo Summit and Film Festival in Belgium last year, and closed the TIFF Next Wave Film Festival in Toronto in February. It was recently nominated for five Canadian Comedy awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Writer.
Mullen and Doiron both star in the film, alongside Devon Bostick from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, Martha MacIsaac (Superbad) and Kevin McDonald of The Kids in the Hall. There’s also an appearance by Christopher Lloyd.
The film is available On Demand in the U.S. Aug. 2, hits U.S. theatres Sept. 6, and opens in Canada in the fall.
The Niagara Falls screening includes an appearance by the film’s bloody Winnebago, along with several props. Local band The Maddhatters will get the party started at 7 p.m. (band member Frank Pietrangelo has provided music for all of Mullen’s films).
Cast members will also be signing posters, and Mullen and Doiron will have a Q&A session. Prizes for best dressed Zemon will be handed out.
Next up for Mullen and Doiron is an action thriller she hopes to film this September, and she isn’t ruling out a Dead Before Dawn sequel.
