A&E Network has given a straight-to-series order to “The Returned,” a remake of a French zombie drama to be spearheaded by Carlton Cuse and “True Blood” alum Raelle Tucker.
Project hails from A+E Studios and FremantleMedia North America. Haut et Court TV SAS, producer of the original series “Les Revenants,” is also a co-producer.
Cuse wrote the pilot script and will steer the remaining episodes in collaboration with Tucker.
“ ‘The Returned’ has the potential to be one of the most compelling drama series on cable, thanks to phenomenal scripts written by Carlton and Raelle,” said A&E g.m. David McKillop. “We look forward to seeing their vision brought to life onscreen.”
Series revolves around the disruption that occurs in a small town when people who are thought to be long dead suddenly reappear. ABC is mining the same territory at present with its midseason drama “Resurrection,” which has performed well since its March 9 debut.
“The Returned” marks the latest straight-to-series order for Cuse, the veteran showrunner who is also steering A&E’s “Bates Motel,” now in its second season, and FX’s upcoming Guillermo del Toro drama “The Strain.”
The original “Revenants” episodes aired in the U.S. last year on Sundance TV with subtitles.
