Doomed (2005)

Synopsis: The year is 2020, and as the ten contestants of "Survival Island 2020" converge on a deserted island to compete for $50 million, money is about to become the least of their concerns. "Survival Island 2020" is the latest reality television craze, but in order to keep the ratings up producers will have to resort to more sensational tactics than ever before. As the contestants gather to go over the rules of the game, the producers reveal that their common enemy will be a zombie horde with an unrelenting appetite for human flesh. The result of a top-secret military experiment gone horribly awry, these cannibalistic corpses will not stop until everyone is dead or they've been dispatched with a bullet in the head - whichever comes first. Now, as the sun warms the azure waters around this picturesque island paradise, the hapless contestants are released into the jungle to do battle with a mindless enemy driven by hunger and devoid of any reason or logic.


The Running Man + "Survivor" + The Most Dangerous Game + Zombies = Doomed

1) ACTING: Nothing incredible here, some actors were better than others, but due to the stereotypical characters and the movie's short run time, character development wasn't really at the forefront. and sadly, since all the "contestants" were major league criminals, do we as the viewer want anyone to win?

2) PRODUCTION: While this is a low budget flick, the production values were pretty good. The director did try to cover his lack of a budget with specially angled shots and colored lenses for the camera. And the fight scenes were pretty good as well. Sadly, for a zombie movie, blood and gore was very minimal. For a zombie movie, I feel that blood and gore should be a staple, unless it's not your average run-of-the-mill zombie movie. (Fido, for example, which by the way, had more blood & guts that this one) The zombie make up was kinda "iffy" at times, and at a few spots, it looked like some of the zombies were wearing cheesy masks.

3) ZOMBIES: These would be "Snyder Runners' that are willing to fight as well and also would lie in wait for their victims. The make up consisted of mainly "grayface" with some minor facial applications. All the zombies were in army camoflauge (dunno why...). Nothing new here...

4) THE CAUSE: Unless I blinked and missed it, I have NO idea why or how these zombies came to be.

5) NUDITY: None.

FINALLY: This one wasn't incredibly bad. It wasn't a bad idea to use zombies this way. Again, this is one of those movies where you don't really know who to root for, since everyone is bad and you stand witness as everyone cheats and backstabs each other. Maybe a little less drama between the teams and more zombie action would've helped this one. The "Survivor" idea was good, and as with all reality contest shows, you never know who will be standing at the end.

Flight of the Living Dead (2007)

Synopsis: On a routine red eye flight from Los Angeles to Paris, a renegade group of scientists has smuggled aboard a container holding a fellow scientist infected with a deadly genetically engineered virus which reanimates the dead. While the 747 crosses through violent thunderstorm, and no place to land, the flesh-eating zombies quickly spread the virus, infecting passengers and crew, the few survivors must fight for their lives stranded in the air with no way out.

Zombies, you are cleared for landing...

1) ACTING: The acting was very good in this movie. Everyone made their roles believable. Even though some stereotypical characters were present, there were no problems.

2) PRODUCTION: The production values of this movie were very good. Scenes were properly lit, no weird camera angles, special effects were good and there was plenty of blood and gore. When someone is attacked by a zombie, you see the rips and tears and teeth marks on the victims. You see the wound where the blood is coming from, not just "let's throw blood on an actor and say they've been wounded." Nice normal soundtrack as well.

3) ZOMBIES: The zombies here would be "Snyder Runners," not that there is really anywhere to run on a jet, but they are very violent and aggressive. The zombie make up consisted of creepy eye contacts and a mouth full of blood. More than a few times, the viewer sees the zombies "licking their chops." There is no sign of the zombies remembering when they were alive, and no type of communication other than a cobra-like hiss.

4) THE CAUSE: Man made virus spread by mosquitoes.

5) NUDITY: None.

FINAL: This movie was just a fun little romp into zombieland. For a "B" movie, it was pretty good. I really think this should have been released to theaters. While there is nothing new here (zombie-wise) that hasn't been seen before, having a jet full of zombies was a good idea, as literally, there is nowhere to run and escape or hide. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary or new when it comes to zombie movies, you won't find it here. This is just another solid, entertaining entry into the "living dead" movie genre.

It's Time to Kiss the Bloody Bride on New '[REC] 3 Genesis' US One-Sheet

The official US '[REC] 3 Genesis' one-sheet made its premiere at the end of the last week. Most readers will recognize the poster shown below as it is actually identical to the previously revealed Spanish one-sheet, well apart from some loose translation for the attached tagline. The Paco Plaza (['REC']) helmed sequel '[REC] 3 Genesis' will hit VOD first across the US from 3 August and then it will be followed up with a limited theatrical run from 7 September. The last word for UK-ers however was that we should be seeing this in theatres around the 11 May. Spanish cutie Leticia Dolera appears on the new one-sheet and she is joined in the movie by Diego Martin, Javier Botet, Àlex Monner, Ismael Martínez, Ana Isabel Velásquez, Mireia Ros, Itziar Castro, Blai Llopis and Emilio Mencheta. Night of the Living Dead 3D (2006)

Synopsis: Barb and her brother Johnny travel to the country for the funeral services of their aunt, but they arrive late and drive direct to the cemetery. They see the location empty, but sooner they are attacked by zombies. Johnny escapes in his car leaving Barb alone, but she is rescued by the drug dealer and college student Ben. He drives his motorcycle to the Cooper farm, and the patriarch Henry Cooper does not give credit to Barb. When the farmhouse is under siege of a group of flesh-eaters zombies, the local mortician Gerald Tovar Jr. arrives and tells a scary story about the origin of the zombies.

I really wanted to like this one...

1) The acting was passable. No really bad stand outs, but nothing incredible, either. Sid Haig seemed pretty bored while doing this movie and just showed up for the paycheck.

2) PRODUCTION: For a movie that ACTUALLY went to the theaters, I was kind of surprised that this wasn't done as good as it could've been. I would've rather the money that was spent on the mediocre 3D effects be spent on the actual film and turned this into a much better production. It all came off as kind of amateurish, which was disappointing. Sadly, I have read numerous articles where the writer and director have both said that they were TOLD to do specific things in this movie by the company that footed the budget and could not stray from those instructions. That company is Taurus Entertainment. In my opinion, it seems that this company is just interested in passing off mediocre shlock for a quick buck. (They also were behind a disappointing sequel to ANOTHER Romero movie, Day of the Dead 2: Contagium.) While this movie bombed at the box office, I'm sure that with DVD sales and international profits, Taurus will have more than made their initial budget back, despite the complaints of moviegoers everywhere.

3) ZOMBIES: These zombies (as you would imagine) are "Romero Shamblers," but with a little more mean in them. The make up for the zombies varied from discolored faces and special eye contacts to many facial applications. The zombies didn't look all that bad. And they eat their victims. Nothing new here.

4) THE CAUSE: Man made.

5) NUDITY: Tom and Judy in barn getting it on when the zombies attack. Tom manages to get his drawers on, yet Judy stands there and screams and then runs around outside from the zombies and finally locks herself in Tom's truck...completely nude.

FINAL: Sadly, I tried to like this. I don't hate it; I'm just bothered by how bad it is. A lot of it had to due with the title. I know a lot of people will hate it just because it's a remake / re-imagining of a classic. I personally think if it was called "When Zombies Attack Hooterville," it probably would've been received as just another lousy zombie movie. But to try and take on Romero and then do it badly, creates a lot of grief. Especially, when parts of the movie are totally changed or left out completely. NotLD was remade once in the 1990's and was pretty damn good. Another version of NotLD wasn't needed, especially a bad one.
