PLANTS VS ZOMBIES 2: IT'S ABOUT TIME DEBUTS 7/18/13 EXCLUSIVELY FREE ON iOS!

"Plants vs. Zombies 2," the zombie game we've all been driven mad waiting for ever since the original "Plants vs. Zombies" took over our collective psyche in 2009, now has a definitive price and release date.

PopCap Games announced Monday that the tellingly-titled "Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time" will launch exclusively on the iOS app store on July 18 for the opaque price of free-to-play.

While the original "Plants vs. Zombies" was set almost exclusively on the backyard and front lawn of the intrepid gardener-cum-zombie slayer who constituted the game's player character, PopCap has broadened the narrative scope of "It's About Time." The studio promised diverse settings including Ancient Egypt, the Wild West, and Pirate-era high seas. No word yet on how, exactly, both the zombies and the zombie-killing plants have managed to circumvent the space-time continuum.

While the sequel will most likely be ported to countless other gaming platforms (if it's anything like its massively successful predecessor, that is), PopCap noted that "It's About Time" is designed with a touch-screen interface in mind, adding that there will be "all-new touch-screen power-ups that enable players to 'break the fourth wall'."

Making any game free-to-play tends to give some gamers and critics pause — especially when a new business model threatens to alter an acclaimed title like "Plants vs. Zombies." PopCap didn't go into much detail about how, exactly, it plans make money with "It's About Time," except to say that players will be able to spend real-world currency to purchase upgrades and other virtual items. The studio insisted that despite any monetization mechanic, the "vast majority of the game will be entirely free."
