Kickstarter Project: Zombie Map App

An app that enables filmmakers to upload their short Zombie films to a map and track the spread of the Zombie infection cinematically

DOCUMENT THE SPREAD OF THE ZOMBIE INFECTION

WHAT IS ZOMBIE MAP?

Zombie Map is a mobile device application and a website that features a video player and a world map. The first video informs the user that the Zombie apocalypse is upon us, and asks people from across the world to document the spread of the infection by shooting and uploading films directly to the map - every film will put another marker on the map. Users will be able to select any marker on the map and watch that short Zombie film, cell phone Zombie attack or sighting, a picture of yourself as a Zombie or the #zelfie, news footage of the Zombie apocalypse from across the globe, blogs on how you're holding up, tips on Zombie survival, kill of the day, and whatever else you can think of. We have faith that you will surprise us.

WHAT ELSE CAN ZOMBIE MAP DO?

Zombie Map has three other features:
Zombie Hordes
First off, we are building in a tool for Zombie walk organizers that will enable them to feature their events on the map, draw out the route of their walk, and post any relevant information like parking, family friendly activities, or any kind of information that would be unique to their events in a video or image below.

Here is an example of what the Zombie Walk routes might look like.

Safe Houses
We also included "Safe Houses." These are Zombie Map-friendly establishments and sponsors who are still in business after the apocalypse.

 Zombie Alerts
"Zombie Alerts" are push notifications that inform the user that they are within a hundred mile radius of a Zombie attack. They will be instructed to watch this video for more information and to take cover.

WHY IS ZOMBIE MAP IMPORTANT?

This project is about bringing people together and having fun with something that belongs to Zombie Fans and Indie filmmakers. It will put the story of the Zombie directly into the hands of the fans of the genre, not just the bigger players in the film and television industry. The first Zombie films were all independent films, and we are going to keep it that way. We also want to give the fans something they never had before - the ability to make their own Zombie film.

HOW ARE YOU PULLING THIS OFF?

We first invited 4 filmmakers to help us shoot four short Zombie films. Then word got out about what we are doing, and it wasn't long before we had eight filmmakers. Then the infection started to spread. First in Portland Oregon, then Los Angeles California, and then the first international documentation of the virus came up in New Zealand. Since then we have heard about the virus showing up in Dublin and here in the states - New Mexico, Minnesota and Detroit. We still are getting new reports coming in daily. Here are a few of the cases we have recorded to date:

Risks and challenges

The one thing we have learned about film production, technology development, and live event coordinating is that things don't always go as planned. It is amazing a feature film is ever completed at all, and Roze and his team have become very good at what they do.
"The only way to eat a whale is one bite at a time."
Project management and leadership that honors the creatives involved are the two key elements that will enable our success with a project of this magnitude.
This is not the first time this team has delivered creative projects and technology on budget and on time. We have delivered two feature films for worldwide distribution and have passed Quality Control Departments from some of the biggest distributors in the business. We have also been actively developing technology for MINDPLATE.tv since 2012. This has trained the team on how to work with a variety of specialists and develop a strict testing process for that tech.
"I have learned how not to emotionally react to set backs and instead use that time to solve problems effectively" - Roze
This is where leadership comes into play. A director, project manager, or anyone in a position of leadership sets the tone for their team. You don't tell people what to do, you inspire them to take action and allow their expertise to shine.
Finally, we need to address financial responsibility. This is the boring part of leadership, but the bottom line guides every creative choice. We have a business accountant, tech development project manager, and two feature film line producers on the team. We are proud to say that we have yet to go over budget on any of our projects.
