In between slow news and reviews, I figured I would take a look into those upcoming zombie movies that just never appeared. Y'know the ones...you saw a preview or a clip of art or an actor said s/he had signed on to a movie, and that was the end of it. Weeks became months and then years and still nothing. Sadly, let's see if some of these movies about the dead are simply that...dead.
First up: whatever happened to Wesley Snipes' Zombie Western 'Gallowwalker?'
Synopsis: When a nun broke her covenant with God to save the life of Aman, her unborn son, he was cursed for life. As an adult, Aman has killed those who have crossed him. But his curse brings his victims back to life, and as the undead, they pursue him endlessly for revenge. Forever suffering this curse, Aman enlists Fabulos, a young gunman, to fight by his side against his undead victims.
This film first started to garner attention in 2005 as action star Chow Yun-fat was in talks to be the zombie bounty hunter.
That fell through and all was quiet on the development front for over a year until Wesley Snipes, hot from his 'Blade' movie series, signed on to star.
Things proceeded smoothly from there on, as other stars signed on, sets were chosen and a director was named.
Everything was going full steam ahead until in late 2006, Snipes and 2 other men were charged with 8 counts of conspiracy to defraud the U.S. Government regarding income taxes.
As the trial proceeded, Snipes continued working on 'Gallowwalker.'
On February 1, 2008, Snipes was acquitted on the felony count of conspiracy to defraud the government and on the felony count of filing a false claim with the government. He was, however, found guilty on 3 misdemeanor counts of failing to file federal income tax returns (and acquitted on 3 other "failure to file" charges) and was sentenced to 3 years in prison for willful failure to file federal income tax returns. Throughout the next few years, Snipes continued working while numerous appeals were filed on his behalf.
'Gallowwalker' had finished shooting by the time Snipes had reported to federal prison to begin his 3 year sentence on December 9, 2010.
After this, 'Gallowwalker' fell off the face of the earth. Apparently, the movie is completely finished, but there is no further info or a release date that has been confirmed. While researching the wonderful world wide web for info for this article, everything regarding a release date is sketchy at best.
Allegedly, Netflix had this movie for rent in 2009, but I cannot confirm this other than it was listed to be in their inventory in 2009. I also found a release date of April 2011 for it to have been released here in the states, which we know better. Lastly, someone at IMDB.com stated that it was advertised as a pre-order on Amazon.com in the UK this coming September, but I found nothing there.
Another tidbit of info I found was that it (again) allegedly was sold by the producers to another company for distribution.
I did happen to find a 3 minute trailer for the movie, though. And don't be fooled: there are some clips on YouTube that say "click here" to see the entire movie; these link to a dead site. It seems the trailer may be all we see of 'Gallowwalker' for now...if ever.
