Can you survive Texas Hold’em, zombie style?

The undead will go all-in until only one survivor remains on Feb. 20 at the Pershing Community Center, as Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation hosts, “Zombie Apocalypse Texas Hold’em.”

The zombie-themed card tournament begins at 6 p.m., giving participants a chance to win a variety of prizes for the top eight finishers.
“We’re giving away zombie survival gear — we’re looking at a generator, flashlights, lanterns, camping chairs, first-aid kits, and of course there’ll be some MREs,” said LoraLee Neubeck, special events coordinator with the post’s Installation Wide Events Office. “We’ll have a first-out prize for the first person out of the tournament, and we’ll also have drawings that will take place at the first intermission.”

Advance registration is $20 per person and is under way now through Feb. 19 at the Installation Wide Events Office  in Building 1000 and online at  fortleonardwoodmwr.com.

Registration is $30 the day of the event. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

“It’s a last-man-standing tournament. We play until the last card is played,” Neubeck said. “Basically, we play until there is a winner. We don’t have an end time — we’ve gone until 2 a.m. before.”

FMWR has held several Texas Hold’em tournaments with a variety of themes over the years, but this is the first event designed to appeal to fans of zombie movies, such as the cult-classic “Dawn of the Dead,” or popular TV shows like, “The Walking Dead.”

“In the past, we had done a western night, sports night, pirate night, but hadn’t done anything zombie-related — we thought it was long overdue,” Neubeck said. “It’s just such a popular theme, that it made sense.”

Participants who show up in “zombie attire” will receive additional chances for door prizes, Neubeck said.

“They are encouraged to come dressed as a zombie, a zombie hunter or a victim,” she said. “They don’t have to arrive in costume — it just makes it more fun, and anyone who does dress up gets a free drawing ticket.”

Players must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

The event  is open to the public.
