New ‘Zombie Kid Diaries’ teaser video and cover art
Trust Fred Perry to breathe more life into his undead creation. The prolific San Antonio comic book writer/artist recently posted an animated teaser for “Zombie Kid Diaries,” his series of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” spoofs about a walking dead middle schooler with dreams of video game fame. Meanwhile, “Zombie Kid” publisher Antarctic Press unveiled cover art for “Zombie Kid Diaries: Walking Dad” (right), the next book in the series that’s sure to give new meaning to “deadbeat dad.” “Walking Dad” lurks into print in December.
Perry animated the “Zombie Kid Diaries” teaser himself, which features the same scribbled notebook art like you’d find in the books. The “Gold Digger” creator found inspiration for the “Zombie” short from a very much alive ’80s franchise.
“A long time ago, G.I. Joe created a television commercial for it’s line of books!” Perry says at his YouTube post. “I still personally think that those series of commercials are among the greatest segments of animation ever! They totally made me want to go out and buy those comics and I couldn’t wait for the animated series to happen.
“So, I thought, why not start a series of animated commercials for my books?”
Perry debuted zombie kid Bill Stokes last year in “Diary of a Zombie Kid.” The spoof looked a lot like “Wimpy Kid” material, so much so that “Wimpy Kid” creator Jeff Kinney filed a restraining order citing trademark infringement. Antarctic complied and Perry retooled Stokes’ story into “Zombie Kid Diaries.”
The new series premiered this year with “Zombie Kid Diaries: Playing Dead,” featuring art by David Hutchison, followed by “Zombie Kid Diaries: Grossery Games” with art by Brian Denham. Denham also illustrated this summer’s free “Zombie Kid” for Free Comic Book Day and returns for zombie art detail in “Walking Dad.”
