October 1, 1968; ‘Night of the Living Dead’ unleashes zombie subculture





On this day in 1968, director George A. Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” opened, and the modern zombie craze was let loose. Hordes of films about the undead followed, as did sequels (“Dawn of the Dead”),spoofs (“Shaun of the Dead”), conventions, undead apocalypse survival guides and zombie balls and pub crawls.
