'Walking Dead' ratings kill the competition

The living just can't get enough of the undead.

AMC has announced that Sunday's Season 3 finale for its zombie drama "The Walking Dead" managed to best all previous impressive records set by the series. More than 12.4 million viewers tuned in for the initial 9 p.m. broadcast of "Welcome to the Tombs," including 8.1 million in the coveted 18-49 demographic. Those numbers once again propelled the drama into the top spot across cable and broadcast television, a feat even more impressive when you consider Sunday evening was also the premiere for the hugely popular "Game of Thrones" on HBO.

“Two words: Grateful. Dead,” AMC president Charlie Collier said. “It’s a joy that we get to work with such tremendous talent to make the walking dead and talking dead come to life for audiences that continue to engage and grow. In just three seasons, 'The Walking Dead' has become a pop-culture phenomenon, entertaining millions of passionate viewers and obliterating traditional lines between cable and broadcast television.”

As for what's in store for season four (which bows in October), series creator Robert Kirkman told TV Line we should some big changes.

"There’s always going to be new locations and new places to discover and explore," he says. "I don’t want to reveal too much; Season 4 is still five months away. But I will say that as we see at the end of Season 3 we’re definitely going to start Season 4 at the prison. We may be there the whole season and we may not be… But there are going to be some big differences from Season 3."
