Danny Boyle Isn’t Sure If 28 Months Later Will Happen

Talks of another film in the franchise that began with Danny Boyle’s terrific 28 Days Later have been going on for a while now. The director has certainly flirted with the idea of returning to the series, after Juan Carlos Fresnadillio stepped in for the last film (28 Weeks Later), but so far, nothing has been confirmed just yet in regards to 28 Months Later.

This week though, in a recent interview with Wired, Boyle has stated that not only is there a slim chance of him ever returning to make 28 Months Later, but that he’s not even a fan of zombie films in general.

“I don’t like zombie movies. I never did. We took a genre and fucked with it. Zombie aficionados, they’re quite precious with all their rules. Like with running: ‘They don’t do that!’ Of course there are so many manifestations of zombies now, the rule book has gone out the window,” he said. “I saw one episode of ‘The Walking Dead,’ and it was very gripping. But the zombies were stumbling around again, which I hate.”

“Given what we’ve just been talking about, it’s very difficult to know whether zombies are overexposed now as a concept. So it’s 40/60 whether 28 Months Later happens or not. But we did have an idea of where to set it and what it might be about,” Boyle said. But just don’t expect him to share just what those ideas are “because they’ll end up in ‘The Walking Dead’ ” he joked.

So, unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the film is very high up on Boyle’s lists of projects to make and it’s doubtful that we’ll ever see it at all. It’s unfortunate, too. As stated above, 28 Days Later is an excellent film and the reason it’s so great is because, as Boyle said, the film took the genre and fucked with it. It wasn’t just another recycled zombie flick.

Its sequel, 28 Weeks Later, was quite good as well (despite not being directed by Boyle) and definitely left me wanting more. I think the fanbase is still there and audiences would love to see Boyle direct another entry in the franchise. It just seems like the director doesn’t have much interest. Here’s hoping that changes though, and sometime in the near future.

All that being said, he does have a good point, about zombies being overexposed. Zombies have been done to death at this point, but if there’s one man who can make them exciting and fresh again, it’s Danny Boyle.
