Alex Garland says there’s a possibility we’ll be getting a third movie in the 28 Days Later/28 Weeks Later series, with serious talks already under-way.

Directed by Danny Boyle and starring Cillian Murphy, the first film – which revolved around a deadly disease wiping out much of the human race – was a huge horror hit, while the sequel was equally well-received, leading to speculation about a third.

So when screenwriter Garland stopped by IGN’s London office to promote directorial debut Ex Machina we asked him if there has been any progress.

“We’ve just started talking about it seriously” he explained. “We’ve got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility. It’s complicated. There’s a whole bunch of reasons why it’s complicated, which are boring so I won’t go into, but there’s a possibility.”

As with 28 Weeks Later, Garland says he’ll more likely executive produce than write the script, and as for a title, it will somewhat predictably involve months…

“It’s more likely to be 28 Months than 28 Years” he revealed. “28 Years gives you one more place to go. 28 Decades is probably taking the piss.”
