'Walking Dead's Kirkman Talks McFarlane Toys' Michonne Statue
By Zack Smith
Fans of "The Walking Dead’s" zombie-slaying swordswoman Michonne had better start saving their pennies – a new Michonne resin statue is coming from McFarlane Toys this June, and it’s got more Walker-stabbing action than you can handle.
The resin statue is approximately 14.5 inches high with a base that rotates 360 degrees, and features Michonne throwing down on a couple of Walkers, with gruesome detail from every angle. The suggested retail price is $295.00, and there will only be 1,500 pieces made.
“It’s a collaboration between myself and Todd McFarlane and McFarlane Toys,” says "The Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman in a phone call. “I’d been in discussions with McFarlane about doing the statue, and I said, ‘I really want to do something that pushes the envelope.’”
Kirkman calls the statue “an intensified version” of the Michonne character. “Fans are definitely going to recognize her and the iconic aspects of that character, but I think there’s a lot of room to push the envelope and make things a bit more heightened, a bit more awesome,” Kirkman says. “And this statue is definitely an awesome version of Michonne.”
Very hardcore "The Walking Dead" fans might notice a few differences from the Michonne they know and love in this statue. “One thing that I really wanted to do was do something that was somewhat unlike 'The Walking Dead,'” Kirkman says.
“Michonne is a very cool character – she’s definitely the most action-oriented character from the series, and I really liked the idea of letting the McFarlane team run wild, and do their own take on Michonne, something that wasn’t necessarily completely accurate with the way Michonne exists – having two swords, and just going at it and doing something that’s a lot more over-the-top than what we usually do with 'The Walking Dead.' And they turned it into a really cool statue.”
“Obviously, the sculpting team at McFarlane really outdid themselves. I think this is a really remarkable piece of art.”
Kirkman says that he’s up for making more "Walking Dead" character statues --“I think there’s a lot of guys out there that’d be cool to see as statues,” naming such newer characters as Negan and Jesus, along with Tyreese, though he says he’ll go for “what the fans want,” if they’d prefer statues of more high-profile characters such as series hero Rick Grimes.
So, "Walking Dead" fans – if you know who you’d most want to see in statue form, let us know…because Robert Kirkman might hear you.
While we had Kirkman on the phone, we also asked which of his other comic book properties he’d most like to see in toy form. “It’s hard for me to pick, but Super Dinosaur would definitely be high on my list, because it’d be such an awesome toy, and my children would love it,” he said. He also cited his other long-running Image series: “Invincible has gotten to a point where I think it would be an absoultuley spectacular line of figures if you could do it with like 100 figures like the 'Star Wars' or 'G.I. Joe' toys.”
Note to toy companies – if you want to do a 100-figure line of Invincible figures, Robert Kirkman’s waiting for your call.
Next week for another amazing "Walking Dead" reveal from Todd McFarlane himself!
