Publisher Activision has announced the first major downloadable content pack for its blockbuster shooter, Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Titled Revolution, the upcoming DLC adds five new maps (four for regular multiplayer and one for zombies). Speaking of the popular mode in which players to fight off hordes of the undead: A new twist on the popular game type, called Turned, turns you into a zombie so you can compete against your friends.
Activision will release Revolution first on the Xbox 360 on Jan. 29 for $14.99. Activision didn’t say when we might see the content pack on other platforms, including PC, PlayStation 3, and Wii U.
“With Black Ops II, the team set out to challenge assumptions about what fans should expect from Call of Duty, and there’s no exception with Revolution,” said developer Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia in a press release. “It starts with the massive amount of content that Revolution offers: four distinct multiplayer maps, an entirely new zombies map and new zombies mode, and a new bonus weapon. But quantity is just the start — it’s the variety of new gameplay options in Revolution that sets it apart, making it our most compelling DLC offering to date, and a must-play experience for Call of Duty fans.”
The new weapon Lamia is talking about is the Peacekeeper, a new sub-machine gun included in the DLC. The new multiplayer maps take place in the French Alps, a dam facility in Pakistan, a ruined luxury resort in the sand dunes of the Gobi Desert, and … Venice Beach? Huh?
“Finally, Grind transports players to the historic birthplace of skateboarding, California’s Venice Beach, where they will battle it out through the ramps and half-pipes of this massive, epic skate park in a multiplayer environment comprised of unique curved architecture requiring players to adapt and learn new ways to take cover,” details the press release.
Well, that’s hilarious. A ruined Chinese city is the setting for the new zombies map, but now I kind of wish we could fight off the undead in a skate park, too.
Call of Duty is a massive franchise. Black Ops II earned $1 billion in sales during its first 15 days at retail. DLC like Revolution helps to add revenue on top of the initial game purchase. It’s the first of four major content packs planned for release. You can see the new content in action in the video below.
