Michael J. Roth and Steve Longi have acquired feature film and TV rights to the Off Broadway musical-comedy “Zombie Prom,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Roth is producing through his MJR Films and Longi via Longitude Entertainment. Kirk Hunter is exec producing, and Vicki Palatas will co-produce.
The feature film adaptation will be written by Vince Marcello and Mark Landry, with Marcello directing.
“Zombie Prom,” written by John Dempsey and Dana P. Rowe, originated in the early 1990s as a musical-comedy homage to the musicals and films of the 1950s, telling the story of a forbidden romance between the rebellious bad boy Jonny and the good girl Toffee. After falling into a nuclear reactor, Jonny returns to his love as a zombie.
Marcello and Landry teamed with Robert Horn to write Disney’s “Teen Beach Movie,” and Marcello recently produced and directed an installment of the “American Girl” series “Grace Stirs Up Success” for Universal.
Dempsey and Rowe were nominated for the Olivier Award for “The Fix,” directed by Sam Mendes, and “The Witches of Eastwick,” both produced by Cameron Mackintosh.
Longi is co-producing “Hacksaw Ridge,” to be directed by Mel Gibson and starring Andrew Garfield as well as STX’s “Russ and Roger Go Wild” with Will Ferrell. He recently produced and directed “Willie Barcena: The Truth Hurts.”
Roth most recently produced “Silent but Deadly,” starring John Tartaglia, Dawn Wells and Lee Meriwether.
Demsey and Rowe are represented by Adams Artists’ Agency. Marcello is represented by Gersh and by Peter McHugh of Gotham. Landry’s attorney is Mark Muir at Greenberg Glusker.
