Exercise your (very delicious) brain at a discussion on the current state of the zombie arts led Penn State Mont Alto faculty member Peter Dendle.
Dendle, a leading expert on zombie cinema and author of The Zombie Movie Encyclopedia Vols. 1 and 2, will give a talk titled “Zombie Movies: Redefining the Zombie for the ‘War on Terror’” at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. This Penn State West Humanities and Social Sciences Colloquium Series event takes place in 180 Jack Burke Research and Economic Development Center, 5101 Jordan Road; admission is free and open to the public and post-dead. Parking will be available in the deck south of Burke Center, off Technology Drive.
The Zombie Movie Encyclopedia was the first exhaustive overview of the undead film canon; Dendle interprets the broader significance of the zombie in contemporary Western mythology before evaluating 200 movies made over a 65-year period starting in the early 1930s. Volume 2 offers a comprehensive summary of zombie movies from the first decade of the new millennium, years Dendle calls “the most dynamic and vital period yet in the history of the zombie genre.”
An associate professor of English, Dendle teaches courses on Old and Middle English language and literature; folklore and culture; 20th and 21st century representations of the Middle Ages; and the monstrous in film, folklore and society. His research interest is the study of religious, folkloric and literary representations of the demonic as a lens through which societal anxieties are viewed.
Dendle is co-editor of three collections of academic essays on various aspects of the preternatural: Health and Healing from the Medieval Garden, The Ashgate Research Companion to Monsters and the Monstrous and The Devil in Society in Premodern Europe.
